Holiday Presence

I just had a short thought I wanted to share this holiday season …

I was clearing out spam voicemails the other day and came across the 5 saved messages I have from my pop pop. I played all of them. Some I played twice or more. I smiled because he would say, Hiya Samantha it’s your pain in the ass pop pop calling, and then he would proceed to say whatever else the message entailed. As I was looking at the date of one of the messages I realized it was thr day or so before he passed. I hadn’t gotten over there to see him but we talked as often as I could. When I saw the date and realized It was one of my last messages, immediately, it became more significant.

As we round another holiday season that somehow flies by with no remorse, I urge you to slow down. Just be present in the moment you’re in. Put your phone down. Take a deep breath and take it all in. I talk with my sister daily, and this time of year is hard for both of us without our mom here. All times of year are hard without your mom. But even after 10 Christmases without her it doesn’t get easier. We both agree that although the holidays have a certain suckiness without the ones you love, there are still many reasons to carry on with the traditions and love that has been planted over the years. I know now how full my heart is having a niece to pass on all that my mom has taught my sister and I over the years. Whether it’s traditions that are old, or newly innovated with those we love in mind.

My point to make is this, as I read the book The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, I am reminded that memories are so important. They’re in fact, more important than material objects, and some might argue , than sentimental objects. They are stored in our hearts only to be recalled when the moment presents itself. Take nothing for granted because as you get older, the presents you’d like to receive are ones that money simply cannot buy. Our time here is limited and should be honored as such.

Merry Christmas & Merry Any Holiday that you celebrate. I hope it is filled with something that sparks joy inside you this holiday season. ๐ŸŽ„โœจ
